HOLY WEEK – Tenebrae

St. Cuthbert’s Church beginning at 8 p.m.

A service which is an adaptation from those held in the ninth century with the word Tenebrae being the Latin word meaning “darkness”.
The story of Jesus’ suffering on the cross and his death is divided into 8 readings. After each one is read, a candle is extinguished so that eventually there is total darkness. At this point there is a loud noise (strepitus in Latin) to signify the full loss of God’s presence and the impact of the death of Jesus on the whole of creation.
